Hi all one of the winter projects would be to make a set of boom gallows. I would like to have them hight adjustable Sailing, Parked for the night ( extra head hight), and put away for the week (cover up). Oh and keeping costs down.

Any suggestions, photos, dimensions etc

Thanks
Graham

I went for box section so I could bolt on things if required.

A little late to be of help but you never know. I fitted a boom gallows to my 28 last summer. The old gallows had poorly supported wooden uprights that weren't up to the job. I reused the Iroko top piece and placed it on new uprights made from 5cm mild steel tubing. At the top each upright has a flat flange welded to it for through-bolting the top piece. A 3mm steel plate has been heavily welded to the base of each upright and is secured to the deck with 4 bolts. Due to the curvature of the deck a chamfered bit of ply was needed on top as well as some 12mm backing pads beneath. I also took the opportunity to weld a little platform for attaching the foot of our tiller pilot at the right height, which works a treat.

The attached photo was the best I could find; the wood still needs leathering to protect against the inevitable knocks, and the bottom section of the uprights needs whipping or serving as the tiller touches when fully extended (you can see the temporary padding!). I only painted the metal but should really get it galvanised.

This arrangement is designed to be strong enough to take the top end of the mast with the bottom over the bow which we'll need to do when bringing the boat back up through the French canals this year. The previous one worked coming down, so fingers crossed!

I got the metal work done by classic marine and the bottom of the uprights have a couple of plates welded on with a web to give a bit more support. I made the wooden piece myself out of iroko. As the metal is a continuous piece of bar I sandwedged the metal between two pieces and glued a filling piece in above and below the metal to make it look like one solid piece with the uprights going into the wood. Classic marine are in Woodbridge, Suffolk. I had the metal work made from 1" galv bar but you could use tube. Colin has used tube on "Plum". Hope this helps.

Hi Lloyd, the gallows look very neat as does what I can see of the boat. What have you used to bolt it to the deck?

I fitted a boom gallows to my boat this year. It takes a bit of carefull working out to make sure that the tiller has enough room to go all the way over on a tack but the mainsheet doesnt foul on a run. It can be achieved by moving the whole thing fore and aft before fitting untill the right spot is found. I suggest you push the boom out all the way with it supported on the topping lift and hold something upright where you want it to go to get an idea.
