I think its about time for the website to have a makeover. I'm planning to refresh the design of the site over the next couple of months, bring it more up-to-date with today's websites. As well as this I want to add some new features to the site and I wondered if anyone had anything they would like added to the site? Or any overall improvements?

My initial ideas for new features include:

Weather information for areas where members currently keep their boats.
Map information for the best areas/places/pubs to visit on your boat.
Events listings e.g Gala AGM, Mylor Regatta etc.

Any thoughts?

Hello Colin, well, actually we're currently in Surrey but come the summer we should be heading out to the boat with the intention of bringing her home!

As for the format for boat locations ultimately they'd have to end up as latitude and longitude in order to stick them on a map. However postal addresses, towns and localities would be fine as these can be plugged into sites like maps.google.co.uk to convert (geocode) them to lat/lon. Map references in other coordinate systems e.g. OSGB would also do as these can be transformed to lat/lon. If you need a hand with this just let me know...

Homme, what a lovely idea. Thanks. What a lovely place you are at. A long way from Surrey! I have the task of updating the register of all the known Heard boats. When I can find the time to go through all the paper records and e-mails I have and update the spreadsheet I will try to find the current boat locations so that in the future we can link the locations on the spreadsheet to a map just as you suggested, When we next e-mail all owners asking them to send me their latest information about each boat I will ask them to include boat location too. In what format should I ask them to provide the location?

I think a map showing the locations of boats sounds like a great idea! It looks fairly easy to set up and If it's something people would like I'd add it to the site!

The new design is fantastic. The only thing I can think of that might improve it is having a map showing the locations of boats. That way, when visiting or sailing in an area you'd know when to keep an eye out! Locations would only need to be general in case folks are worried about privacy. Actually adding a map to the site is quite straightforward; Google maps provides a good service with it's My Maps and has plenty of advice on how to add a map to a site. Members could send you their boat locations or edit them themselves.

If you like the idea but need a hand feel free to get in touch as I do this kind of thing for a living!

I set up the above site, it allows members to post their own photos quickand easy. As moderator I can delete when required (not so far) but I can also let it flow with no input from me.

As I have moved on from the privateer the site will continue.

I appreciated very much the "news from the yard", which Roger Stephens regulary reported in the GALA Newsletters. May be it is possible, to add such information from time to time at the website?

Hello again, the Gala website refresh is coming along nicely. I just wondered whether anyone had thought of anything else they would like to see on the website?

If anyone has any examples of sites they currently like, either the style or the features of the website please let me know :)

GALA Publications, Clothing and Pennants

Keep up the good work the GALA website is very easy to navigate.

Bill, regarding your posting asking Emily why you cannot see all the older postings, I think it is because you are in the wrong place. You are in the section called "About the website" and I see that you have posted your questions about Little Gilly in this section too, which is not the best place.

If you go to the "General" section of the forum at "http://www.galawebsite.co.uk/forum/7" (hope this link works!) you should see all the posts since the Forum satarted in August 2006, which is where you should ideally post your boat questions.

Emily, I like your ideas of the events and the good locations to visit listings.

However, I am not sure about the usefulness of the weather sites. I have found that everyone has their own favourite weather sites based on experience of their accuracy and the format of the display and so any sites you select to include on the GALA listing are unlikely to get used.

What does everyone else think?
