Hi all, I have just joined the forum and would be grateful for any info on Toshers. I am thinking of buying an 18ft. Tosher and wonder what I should be looking out for. i.e. what are the best and worst features. Does the bowsprit retract easily; can one fit roller furling to the foresails; has anyone in the Solent area got one?

Hi All........... I have just purchased an 18ft LOD Tosher,GRP with timber day cabin, reputed to have been constructed circa 1972. Although I have all the spars, I have no sails and must make an educated guess as to the sail plan. I believe the mizzen was rigged as a standing lugsail, and I suspect that the main was originally a loose footed balanced lugsail. For a number of reasons I plan to make the main into  a standing lug rig and lace the sail to a boom. The distance between the mast and the bow roller is in the order of 0.75 meters, and the non retractable bowsprit about 1'5 meters long This will necessitate the inner foresail being quite small in the foot, and I dont want to let the lower end of the gaff interfere with the leach of the sail. I propose to  rig the main foresail to wykeham martin furling gear....... how much can the leach reasonably extend aft of the inner sail luff so that the boat will travel through the wind?

I would be interested to hear any observations  with regard to rigs, sail plan and any other relevant matters. I will be looking for a complete set of sails......... does any one have anything tucked away in a dusty cupboard?           Thanks      Chris

Hi Roger,
I know the feeling about losing keyboard marathons - might just be a time-out issue as with another forum I know, but I doubt. May also be no entry in subject header? I've tried that with this.
Only cure I found is to "right click/copy" the text to clipboard prior to submitting just in case... no comfort this time though!

Welcome to the forum Lew, hope the Tosher works out!

I have just spent ages sending you a reply to your query, only to discover that it has not appeared on your section of forum. Rather than type it all out again, perhaps you'd like to give me call 01326 373679 Roger S

Lew, further to my previous posting, if you have not already seen it, try clicking on the FAQ link at the top-right of this page to find lots of other info.

Lew, welcome to the forum. I have checked the register of Heard boats and one18ft Tosher I can find near to you was last recorded as being in Southampton. She is called Ariel of Swanwick, an open boat with a Gaff Cutter rig and an outboard engine built in 1984. However, I have no owner details but maybe you could cast around the area now you know the name (let me know if you find her!).

Two others are Adelaide Ann in Cowes and Isla Rose at Burlesdon. I have owner e-mail addresses for these and with e-mail them to you privately with details, assuming you have entered your e-mail address when you registered for this site.

I am sure you have already seen that there is a Tosher for sale on this website so you could have a chat with her owner, or past owner if now sold, for advice.

In general, there is a lot of variation in all of the Heard boats so you will find ones with and without retracting bowsprits and rolling head-sails. Both are easy to adapt/apply if not already fitted.

Hopefully someone who owns an 18ft Tosher will reply with what to look for when buying.

Colin
