Just wanted to share an ongoing project with our Picarooner "Lug Rig ". Acquired 4 years ago as a lug rig version converted to gaf + jib, we opted to try beefing up the lug rig plan and add a jib. The original lug rig was really rather under powered and made the boat cumbersome in anything other than a fresh breeze. We made a 16' 5" mast (two planks of straight grained red pine from the wood shed at MacSalvors in Poole, Camborne), stepped in the same forward location as the original and used a mirror dinghy mast as the mizzen, stepped in the same location as the original, with a Mirror mainsail yard fashioned into a mizzen-boom taken from the rear thwart over a rowlock mounted on the stern. A Cornish Coble mainsail and jib were kindly donated to the project and a larger mizzen was made up by RB Sails in Hayle. The result? A pretty good sailing boat and, with a couple if jibs and mizzens (the original as a storm mizzen), a really flexible suit of sails.
