Anyone know if Martin built his 28s to CE standard after the introduction of the Recreational Craft Directive in June 1998 ? And if so, where to find the CE plate within the boat?
My 28 was built in 2002 (I think - memory getting a bit blurred these days) and certainly has a CE builder's plate. On mine, it is a fairly large oval brass plate mounted high on a part-bulkhead, port side, a little way in from the companionway. But given that there aren't two boats the same, I doubt if that position actually exists on many other 28s!
If there is one, though, it should be pretty obvious.
What I didn't get but which I think the regulations say should be there is some kind of boat manual. I did get all the manuals and instructions for the various bits installed which at least serve some useful purpose, unlike CE paperwork...
More generally, I know that Martin was certainly thinking about CE compliance. For example, we had a discussion about the lifeline question, which neither he nor I wanted, and he had apparently checked and found that jackstays and harnesses would meet the requirement. But as I had a set of harnesses already, we agreed that he would fit a rope-cutter on the prop shaft instead... The joy of working with a small boatbuilder rather than a faceless factory!
